Team Building
After the winter months, with shorter days, less natural light and teams spending much of the day cooped up between meetings and screens, spring arrives as a near-perfect opportunity to reconnect with the outdoors. Mild temperatures, longer days and the general sense of renewal this season brings make outdoor activities far more appealing and comfortable than at any other time of year — neither the extreme heat of summer nor the cold of winter get in the way of the experience.
From an organizational point of view, spring also has practical advantages: the natural settings and estates where these activities usually take place are at their best, with lush vegetation and good weather, and demand hasn't yet hit the peaks of summer, making it easier to find availability and good conditions before the high season kicks in.
The setting where a team building activity takes place plays a big part in its success. An open space, with natural light and contact with nature, almost automatically reduces the tension associated with the office environment and helps people feel more receptive, more relaxed and more willing to take part actively. The simple act of moving around, walking or doing light physical activity outdoors helps conversations flow differently — far more naturally than they would in a meeting room.
Stepping away from the office routine and indoor spaces has an almost immediate effect on the group's mood. Spring, with its light and pleasant temperatures, reinforces that effect: it's far easier to generate enthusiasm and willingness to take part in an outdoor day on a sunny day in April or May than in a closed room in the middle of winter.
Spring brings back the whole range of outdoor activities that are less comfortable during winter. Here are some of the options that make the most of this season.
Spring is also the ideal season for activities related to nature and sustainability, a value that's increasingly present in the culture of many companies. A nesting box building day lets the team collaborate on a hands-on project that directly benefits local wildlife, all while enjoying a day outdoors in a natural setting. It's also a good time for more relaxed proposals, such as setting up a tipi area as a meeting and rest point between activities, making the most of the good weather to eat or socialize outside.
Although spring generally offers favourable weather, it's still a season with some variability, especially in the early weeks. It's always worth having a backup plan or a nearby covered space in case the forecast changes at the last minute, as well as advising participants to wear clothing suited to moderate outdoor physical activity.
It's also advisable to book ahead, since many estates and natural venues start filling their calendars as soon as the good season arrives, and the best spring dates — especially those that fall on long weekends — get snapped up quickly.
Beyond the weather, spring tends to fall at a midpoint in the year when many teams have already wrapped up early-year project closures but haven't yet entered the workload typical of the run-up to summer. That relative lull makes it an ideal opportunity to organize an activity that both offers a break and strengthens team cohesion before the busiest season arrives.
This window is also useful from a purely practical standpoint: since it doesn't clash with summer holidays or the packed year-end schedule, it's easier to find a date when most of the team is available — something that can turn into a real scheduling puzzle at other times of year.
Each season offers different conditions for team building, and it helps to understand them to make the most of each one. Winter greatly limits outdoor options because of the cold and lack of light, pushing most companies toward indoor formats. Summer, meanwhile, offers good weather but comes with the added difficulty of holidays, which make it harder to bring the whole team together, and heat that can become excessive for demanding physical activities during the middle of the day. Autumn recovers some of spring's appeal, though with days that get progressively shorter and weather that grows more unpredictable as the months go on.
Spring, on the other hand, combines the best of several worlds: plenty of light, pleasant temperatures without extreme heat, full teams unaffected by summer holidays, and nature at its most striking. That's why many companies, when they're free to choose the date for their annual activity, end up settling on this season.
Not every spring activity works equally well for every type of team. Larger groups tend to get the most out of formats with several activities running simultaneously, like a scavenger hunt or a mini Olympics, where several small teams can compete in parallel without anyone being left out of the action. Smaller teams, on the other hand, can afford more intensive, personalized experiences, with less need for complex logistics to split the group across different stations or challenges.
It's also worth factoring in the team's average fitness level when choosing the activity: a spring day can be as physical as you like, but it's important that the challenge stays accessible to the whole workforce, including those less used to sport, so that no one feels excluded or uncomfortable during the experience.
Not every company has easy access to estates or large natural spaces, especially those based in city centres. This doesn't rule out enjoying the benefits of spring: many cities have parks, historic gardens or urban green spaces perfectly suited to smaller-scale outdoor team building activities, without the need for long trips. These options are especially practical for companies wanting to make the most of a free weekday afternoon without spending extra time on transport, while still getting the benefit of stepping outside and enjoying the season's light and temperature.
In these cases, adapting the activity to the available space is key: activities that need less ground, station-based challenges within a small radius, or activities that don't depend on a large grassy area all make it possible to enjoy the spirit of spring without leaving the city.
