The Ideal City
What makes a city work? It's not just its buildings, roads or infrastructure: a city only comes to life when every part of it is connected and working in harmony toward a shared purpose. The Ideal City is a collaborative team building activity where participants design and build, together, one large shared city that reflects their organization's values, ambitions and goals.
Teams of 10 to 15 people each take responsibility for one sector of the city: residential areas, landmark buildings, infrastructure, cultural spaces, bridges, hospitals or the town hall. Each team has full autonomy to plan and build its own district — but no district can be built in isolation: every sector has to physically connect, via roads, paths and shared access points that line up with its neighbours' plans.
Participants quickly discover that focusing only on their own project isn't enough: making the whole city work takes shared information, negotiated solutions and decisions made together. Teams leave their tables, visit other districts and adjust their plans so every piece fits the bigger picture.
The activity plays out, in a very visual and hands-on way, many of the challenges every organization faces: managing dependencies between departments, aligning goals, cross-team communication, and balancing individual priorities with the team's shared success.
In the final stage, every district comes together to form one great collective city. As a symbolic close, a representative of the company — the CEO, managing director, or whoever is chosen for the occasion — takes on the role of mayor and officially inaugurates the city with a ribbon-cutting, celebrating a creation that represents far more than buildings and infrastructure: it represents a team's ability to build something bigger than the sum of its parts, together.
