Safe Team Building: the Haka

The pandemic is starting to seem under control, and many companies and employees are already planning strategies to return to in-person work, perhaps with shorter days at first, or only some days a week — the possibilities are many, but what matters is feeling that reassurance and excitement of life returning to normal.

In this initial stage, it's important to look for strategies that let employees reconnect with their work team in a healthy, safe context. Without a doubt, Team Building activities are an excellent way to achieve this, providing a space to resume and continue strengthening work teams. Now more than ever, it's necessary to nurture bonds and grow camaraderie and a good atmosphere among employees. After a period of such intense stress as the one we've been through, it's urgent to promote safety and wellbeing among employees — as we know, the calmer and happier people are at work, the more efficient and productive they'll be. As a result, the safer they feel after such a draining situation as this one, the easier it will be to return to activity normally, in a healthy and productive way. Team Building activities are hugely important in this part of the reopening process, so that human groups can reconnect and sync up both professionally and emotionally. Among all the activities in our catalogue, the Haka is one of the most appealing in this context, both for its goals and its benefits.

Restarting Team Building with the energising Haka

The Haka is a ritual from Māori culture that New Zealand's rugby team made famous worldwide. The "All Blacks", as they're known in the sports world, perform this ritual dance before every match, in which all the players line up on the field facing the opposing team and chant an ancient war cry that achieves a powerful motivational and emotional effect, utterly intimidating for their opponents. This ritual's origin comes from Māori culture, an ethnic group that has mainly inhabited eastern Polynesia and New Zealand since around the 10th century. Among its various cultural expressions is the tribal "Haka" dance, used to motivate and unite the tribe while intimidating adversaries by showing their power and fierceness.

This ritual took place on the battlefield itself, where all the tribe's warriors performed a choreography that included shouts and provocative chants, while pulling faces and sticking out their tongues with a threatening attitude, striking and slapping their bodies to create a tribal, hypnotic rhythm, perfectly synchronised and adding emotion, intensity and originality to the dance. Once tribal wars ended, this ritual came to be performed at festivals, weddings and various celebrations, becoming a symbol of unity, strength and cohesion, as well as a welcoming and recognition tribute.

Running Haka Team Building with total safety

With our Haka Team Building, your team will experience the unity, strength and power a human group achieves when working together towards a shared goal.

The ritual recharges whoever performs it with inspiring, powerful energy, achieving motivation while also raising awareness of the importance of every member's contribution within a team.

What's more, with this activity, you'll discover the incredible story hidden behind our choreography, in which a warrior must hide and flee, not quite knowing what might happen to him. That uncertainty, and his strength in coming out of that situation victorious, contains the true spirit of the Haka dance, and interestingly, with the pandemic, we've all faced that same uncertainty, whether personally, socially or professionally, and this activity, which is a celebration of life and a tribute to overcoming obstacles, is perfect for reclaiming energy, joining forces and bringing out the best in ourselves as a team.

Being such a novel, special context, the activity lets participants discover themselves in new roles and facets, opening up the chance to take on new challenges, freeing them from the stereotypes and limitations that daily work routine often imposes. Likewise, it strengthens and promotes communication and dialogue, two essential tools for achieving efficient, healthy teamwork for everyone.

Zero risk, safety first

The Haka is an activity that can be run outdoors, in large open spaces, where people are normally spread 2 metres apart, with no need to touch, making it the perfect Team Building activity for this moment, both for its organisational benefits and its logistical features.
